Weed Control Information

Mississippi Lake is one of the shallowest lakes in Eastern Ontario, and that means weeds! It is also evolving from cottage country to permanent residences. Traditional bare bones cottage 'roughing it' is giving way to permanent homes with all the conveniences. The nature of weed harvesting is also changing.

Since the 1960's the MLA has operated a channel weed harvester on the lake (featured in previous editions of the Belle.) As times and circumstances change the demand is not so much for channel cutting (high powered speed boats do this quite well) but for shore to channel cutting, around docks and swim rafts. The old weed harvester was getting old and was in need of major repairs (that spells lots of $$$$) to keep it in service. With this consideration in mind, and to meet the new weed cutting requirements, the MLA decided to trade the old weed harvester for a more manageable 4 foot cutting blade weed cutter. The trade was negotiated with John's Marina who have for over 15 years donated a 60 hp outboard motor to drive the old barge harvester and have serviced and stored it over winter. For MLA members, the unit is free for the first day, then we charge $50 per day thereafter. It operates off a 12V deep cycle battery (provided) and fast charger (provided).

The cutter, battery and charger are valued at $4,200.00. As such, we feel that it is reasonable to request a returnable $100.00 deposit to cover possible damages and. We ask all users to sign a waiver form in the event of any accidents. The unit will be available after July 1, 2010.

It cuts with a sickle action on a 4' bar, which is adjustable from 0 to 5' depth in the water. The battery fully charged will run approximately 5 hours. It is recommended to be used on regular run of the mill weeds not corn field water iris or mature rice fields.

To avoid damaging the cutter, we recommend cutting 12" to 18" above the bottom of the lake. When finished, please respect your neighbours and dispose of the cut weeds appropriately. They make great Compost Fertilizer!
